Recruit, Recruit, Recruit

By: Tom Stevens, President and CEO, Pro-Life Union

In 9th grade, a substitute teacher called me up to her desk. Her breath smelled like cigarette smoke and coffee. I’ll never forget her words. “Tommy, I want you to do something for me. Go on a weekend retreat. It’s called Antioch, a few other kids from our high school are going. If you don’t like it…I’ll give you a brand new car from my husband’s Mercedes dealership.” She gave me a proposition that got my attention. I went and of course, I liked it.

My substitute teacher (in a public high school) recruited me. What are you and I going to do to recruit someone into the pro-life movement this month? You can do it! So can I. This month it’s easy. Invite five people (at least one will say yes) to the March for Life. Next month, look for another way to recruit.

Jim Owens (now Deacon Jim Owens) recruited me into the pro-life movement many years ago. He simply invited me to come to the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants Mass and pray in front of Planned Parenthood in Center City.

Who can you recruit today? Make it your New Year’s resolution. There is a generation counting on you. Just do it.
