As we write, the building next door looms empty and crumbling, with whispers of past horrors. It has stood in this condition since January 2011, when infamous abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell was arrested and charged with eight counts of murder and drug conspiracy. Since this 2011 arrest, AlphaCare has prayerfully pursued the acquisition and redemption of Gosnell’s property.
While there have been ups and downs in the process, the status of the building has remained “untouchable.” The property stands resolute in abandonment, impervious to our attempts to garner local political approval to purchase and redeem it.
Although we’re sometimes perplexed or vexed at the attempts of some to prevent our pursuit, God is not shaken or flustered. The Almighty Creator of the universe is unphased; His plans are unthwarted, and He even laughs at man’s feeble attempts to prevent His purposes.
Psalm 33 is a comfort to us:
Let all the earth fear the Lord;
let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
For he spoke, and it came to be;
he commanded, and it stood firm.
The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
the plans of his heart to all generations.
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!
The property at 3801 Lancaster Avenue may or may not go to Sheriff’s Sale this fall. If it does, AlphaCare plans to bid on the property. If not, we will choose to rest in God’s kind providence.
Whatever the outcome, God continues to bless and use AlphaCare by sending more and more women our way. We are not waiting for this situation to resolve to begin our work. The work— empowering pregnant women and families—began more than 38 years ago and continues every day in our office and on the Mobile Medical Unit. We continue to surpass our 2019 program goals. As we push the capacity of our small office in West Philadelphia, we see the real need for additional space in order to serve even more women and families. But that space doesn’t have to be next door. We are confident that God will make His will known to us and lead us. Please continue in prayer for AlphaCare as we seek God’s will, love the pregnant women and families of Philadelphia, and strive to be a beacon of light next to a remnant of past atrocities.
